Stress and self esteem are linked in much of the same way stress is linked to your physical health. Not only does low self esteem make you more vulnerable to stress, but chronic stress can deeply impact your self esteem.
Have you ever had one of those days when everything seems to go wrong? You wake up late for work. You spill coffee on your jacket on your way out the door. The car won’t start and you have a very important meeting in 30 minutes. When you finally drag into work there are a few extra projects on your desk. And the day goes on. In this example chronic stress takes a toll on your self esteem.
Exercise
Exercise is the first recommended stress management activities that will not require you to run or work out an hour everyday. Five minutes of exercise can even be called as management of stress activity as well, particularly if it is done consistently. Do you suffer from stressed out at work? When you feel that stress is building up inside you, try to take a walk around your building. We can conclude that physical activity is a time-efficient method to relieve stress.
Negative self talk is a reflection of our own self concept of how we feel about ourselves. The more we question and judge ourselves the more we question our own “okayness”. The less loving we feel toward ourselves the less competent we feel as human beings. The lower our self concept is the more likely we are to interpret situations and conditions as being unhealthy and dangerous to us and the more likely we are to experience stress.
One way to know if your self talk is faulty is by focusing on the problem rather then the solution. This is the mindset of failure, to see what won’t work rather then what will. Is your glass half empty or half full.
If you anything like me I’m sure you’ve tried things in the past. Well have you ever tried to keep an old clunker running. Isn’t that like pouring good money after bad. We try things that in way touch the root of the problem. You may have purchased a book that said believe in yourself. If you don’t have what you wan then you must not believe. If you believe that means “I have $100,000 in the bank.” But let me ask you this – have you ever really believe it? I mean truly believe it in your heart you had the magic $100,000 in the bank. Well if you truly believed then guess what, you’d have $100,000 in the bank!
The problem is much of what you read is motivation and although that’s good it’s not the way our brain works.
No need to take more then 30 minutes on these stress strategies. Anyone can spare 30 minutes. So isn’t feeling better worth it?
Whatever thoughts and actions you take will dictate the outcome. When the going gets tough, everything in sight becomes an obstacle and we are often halted in our journey to pursue personal development. Instead of burying yourself in your world of emotions, fears and failures accumulated from the past, treat every incidence as your teachers, for they will be valuable tools in your journey to both self improvement and success. No event in life is experienced in vain, if you discover (and learn) the lesson within.
Take a Reflection Walk
If you worry all day or sit at your desk for 8 hours then you need to take a reflection walk. Why not become an optimist for your thirty minutes walk. Although you may know exercise helps relieve stress, a reflection walk can help relieve tress and make you feel better about yourself at the same time. While walking consider these questions:
- What is working?
- What part of my life makes me feel great?
- Whom do I love?
- Where do I love to go?
- What is my favorite book?
- Who are the people in my life that make my life better?
- What are 3 of my finest memories?
So begin right now and take a reflective walk and honor thyself.
